Grade 4 Reading Expectations
Overview: We believe that readers are leaders at Emma K Doub! Solid reading skills are an essential building block for mastery of all other subjects.

Whole Group ELA & Centers: Students will participate in both whole group and small group instruction daily during our ELA Block. Whole group will be used for introducing and teaching new concepts, as well as modeling. During the Center Rotations, students will have the opportunity to independently practice the newly learned skills. Students will also meet with Ms. Doggett daily for small group instruction and guided reading.
Writing: Writer's Workshop will be used daily in Grade 4. Students will plan, write, edit, & revise writing pieces following the Lucy Caulkins' Model. Students will be expected to increase writing stamina throughout the year, and continue to improve as articulate writers who focus on small moments. Students will conference with peers and teachers about their writing pieces to both critique and celebrate. Students will write digitally using Google Docs on the iPad!

Spelling: Students will follow the Words Their Way Spelling Program! They will receive differentiated lists and be tested every other week on their understanding of different spelling patterns.
Word Work: Students will learn different aspects of language and grammar throughout the school year during our ELA block. Topics include root words, prefixes, suffixes, punctuation, capitalization, sentences, clauses, allusions, similes, metaphors, synonyms, antonyms, and more!
